about

'Just an ordinary day
Walking on a war torn street'

This is the reality of life in Ukraine right now following the Russian invasion, we have seen the country ravaged but the people are unbelievably heroic in their defence of their freedom. This sort of war should not be a part of twenty first century life.
The original idea for the song came to me following a visit to Berlin in September 2018. I imagined a story of two young people in the immediate aftermath of the fall of the Wall, a song of hope, of new beginning, of freedom. The musical part of it didn't immediately come to me and indeed one section of the original words were incorporated into last year's 'Room Full Of Music' co written with Robin James Hurt. But in the last few months I found the song telling me it was time to complete it and let it free ... so with the musical part now also born I was getting close, and then .. and then Ukraine was invaded and I just knew this was where the song must be, this is where it was meant to be, this was the story which had been bubbling under these last few years ... A total rewrite the last few days has given me a song ready to record, but although a rewrite the hope, the humanity, the passion of where the song came from remains. A story of two people, a story of a Nation, for a Nation is simply a lot of connected individuals each with their own struggles, dreams, aspirations ... each hoping for a better day when again they can smile and be free ...

lyrics

Ordinary Day
Just an ordinary day
Walkin’ down a war-torn street
Two young lovers holding on
Waiting for the sky to clear

And they will be
As lovers are
They will be
As friends
They will be
As lovers are
They will be …

Oh no ordinary time
They can hear the bombs that fall
Two young lovers holding hands
Waiting for their friends to call

And they will be
As lovers are
They will be
As friends
They will be
As lovers are
They will be …

They will be free
They will be free

Just an ordinary day
Now that war is gone
They look out and see it all
They look out and the Sun has shone

And they will be
As lovers are
They will be
As friends
They will be
As lovers are
They will be …

They will be free
They will be free
They will be free
They will be free
