about

Words & music by Tony Floyd Kenna.

In Summer 2010 I read an article about the Homeless by a Journalist called Alison. Only a few lines into the piece I was moved to write a song and promptly went off and did so, only finishing reading the article later! A few days on I did a basic demo of the song and soon after Kieran added some extra vocals and guitar. It was taking shape. This was all during the recording and release of the Sacred Ground CD by Good Intentions so the song then got parked for a while. I had visions of it being performed either by a Female vocalist or by Christy Dignam of Aslan! When Maggies Farm reformed in the Winter the lads heard the song and thought we should give it a go. But it wasn’t until Heather MacLeod, whom I had met whilst promoting Sacred Ground and my solo stuff, agreed to sing it that I felt we were ready. It would be done for charity, to help create awareness of the Homeless problem we pass everyday. This was just before Christmas. A recording date during the holidays, December 30th., was set and the wheels put in motion. We invited various people to participate, not all could make it but I am delighted to say that as well as Heather and me, all the other members of Maggies Farm came along (Ian, Kieran, Joe & Syl) and also four of The Sisters Of Fate (Annette, Tarney, Eimear & Caoimhe). The final piece to complete the puzzle was of course the great Fred and his recording mobile. So we arrived at Colours International on December 30th. and set into it. There had been no time for rehearsals, apart from Kieran and me this was the first time that everyone played or sang it. A song recorded and mixed in one day. It has a great live energy and ”street’ feel, very appropriate I believe. Having finished the song we now had to arrange a charity link up. At Ian’s suggestion I went off and met Brother Kevin of The Capuchin Day Centre For Homeless People and Brother Kevin said yes! I hope we have done justice to ‘Alison – daughter of our Nation’ and that in some small way we can help the selfless work of The Capuchin Day Centre For Homeless Peole. Tony Floyd Kenna, January 2011.

lyrics

Alison, Daughter of our Nation Alison, Sister to us all Alison, Why does nobody want you? Alison, Alison, Don’t cry. Alison sits on the bridge Her hair un brushed, Her clothes unwashed Feeling tired and feeling hungry, Her eyes show little hope. ‘You have to move along now’, Says the man from the city. ‘You can’t be in public view, Or the newspapers will see you’. So, She shuffles down the street Cold, beyond unwanted, Looking for a corner Where, the World, won’t find her. Alison, Daughter of our Nation Alison, Sister to us all Alison, Why does nobody want you? Alison, Alison, Don’t cry. Alison tries to get some sleep, Wrapped in cardboard boxes. Her boots have holes, you can see her feet, I wonder, will she make it? Alison, Daughter of our Nation Alison, Sister to us all Alison, Why does nobody want you? Alison, Alison, Don’t cry.
