about

Words & music by Tony Floyd Kenna.

Alison - after the storm of 'Heart In A Box' I felt that this song could let the listener relax and reflect for a moment. I wrote 'Alison' a few years ago but had never released a solo version. It originally appeared with Heather and my sometime band Maggies Farm in a fairly fast and epic form. Liam Oragh had decided it would be his and Warren's song for Disc Two. This got me thinking and I decided to revisit it myself but in a simple slower story form, closely reflecting it's creation. I wrote Alison after scanning a piece in the newspaper about homelessness, the piece had been written by a girl called Alison who herself had gone out and sat on the bridge 'begging', to try to get some sense of what many homeless people experience every day. 'Alison' was born, and written as quickly as it takes to put pen to paper.

lyrics

Alison

Alison sits on the bridge
Her hair un brushed,
Her clothes unwashed
Feeling tired and feeling hungry
Her eyes show little hope

‘You have to move along now’
Says the man from the council
‘You can’t be in public view
Or the newspapers will see you’

So, She shuffles down the street
Cold, beyond unwanted
Looking for a corner
Where the World, won’t find her

Alison,
Daughter of our Nation
Alison,
Sister to us all
Alison,
Why does nobody want you?
Alison, Alison,
Don’t cry.

Alison tries to get some sleep
Wrapped in cardboard boxes
Her boots have holes, you can see her feet
I wonder, will she make it?
