Smile For Me 03:50
Smile For Me. By the window I see you, reading a book. And your headphones are playing some song with a hook. You look to the outside, a smile on your face. It's a day just to sit back, to slow down the pace. Won't you smile , smile for me. Won't you smile , smile for me, smile for me. On your way home I'll meet you, and give you, a hug. You don't have to say much, you know that we're good. And walking together, the World at our feet. Just one touch reminds us, that our hearts, they can beat. Won't you smile... And whenever you need me, you know I'll be near. You can just call my name out, and know I will hear. Won't you smile...

‘Smile For Me’ Tony Floyd Kenna reviewed by Geoff Bennett

I always enjoy the opportunity to listen to and sometimes review the music of my Indy friends and in particular, Tony Floyd Kenna.

Typical of the man’s eccentric humour, this CD is entitled ‘Smile for Me – Single’, and contains four tracks.

‘Smile for Me’ is one of those gentle songs I most love from Tony. The predominant instruments are a sensitively played bass and acoustic guitar and Tony uses his gentler vocal style to sing a wistfully romantic ballad,

“By the window I see you, reading a book.
And your headphones are playing some song with a hook.
You look to the outside, a smile on your face.
It’s a day just to sit back, to slow down the pace.

Won’t you smile, smile for me……….”

Light and Shade (Radio Edit), ups the tempo and deepens the mood. Since it appeared opening the ‘All the Colours’ album, this has proved a popular cover song but none have recreated the sinister atmosphere, a Floyd Kenna trademark. A strong drum backing and aggressive guitar work linked with Tony whispering almost menacingly into your headphones gives the feeling that there is more shade than light in the World Tony is exploring with you. This is one not to listen to as you enter the night.

If The Lord Came Now (Album version) opens with a pleasant staccato guitar riff. Once again in Tony’s lower register we imagine what would happen if the Lord came now. There is a tinge of the confessional with the request to make amends before the final judgement but Tony will be ready. It is strange but that one guitar line lightens the whole piece.

Wrapped In You, (Radio Edit) closes the album with a strong tempo. A well balanced instrumental backing features noticeably in this piece and Tony returns to a lighter vocal output.

On the whole this is a well produced album as one expects from Tony and is available immediately in digital format via bandcamp using the following link:

I notice a cd is due this month which I will most certainly purchase for my own collection.

Do take a listen and support your Independent Musicians.

'Smile For Me' The story behind the song.

Linda Ibbotson posted a picture of The Poets Corner in Kinsale. Inside sat a girl at a table, the scene looked like a quiet relaxed moment in time. An idea for a song came to me, I imagined a story built around the scene....  'By a window, she reads, a verse from a book. In her headphones there plays, a song with a hook. And looks, to the outside, a smile on her face. It's a day to sit back, to slow down, the pace'. This outline for the first verse sat with me for a while, I let the story unfold in my head. Changing the narrative to first person I expanded the tale, making it more personal, and built the song around a basic repeating chord pattern. I also felt that a simple chorus would make it easily accessible and easy to relate to. The recording is purposely very simple, all first take, not quiet perfect. I believe this helps keep it fresh and real and hopefully captures and preserves the mood. It's a song not perhaps typical of my usual work and so although I'm working on tracks for the next album I decided to release it as a single, let it have it's own place in time. Eternal thanks to Linda for the muse :)

Smile For Me - Final Version.

By the window I see you, reading a book.
And your headphones are playing some song with a hook.
You look to the outside, a smile on your face.
It's a day just to sit back, to slow down the pace.

Won't you smile for me, smile for me.
Won't you smile for me, smile for me, smile for me.
